INTRODUCTION

The REDDOM Foundation is implementing the project “Wildlife Corridor and Resilient Livelihoods in Nisibón Lagoons (EBA5_022)”, to improve the management and/or rehabilitation of mangrove, coral reef and forest ecosystems in the Maimón River basin, the Maimón Estuary Natural Park and surrounding areas to strengthen the resilience of community livelihoods to storms, contributing to better protection of a biodiversity corridor. This project is being financed by the Caribbean Biodiversity Fund’s EbA Facility with support from the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Climate Action, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMUKN) through the International Climate Initiative (IKI) and KfW

This project aims to train local stakeholders in best practices for the management of mangroves, corals and forest habitats, and their contribution to sustainable livelihoods, climate adaptation and biodiversity.

These actions aim to promote alternative and sustainable livelihoods that contribute to local economic development, environmental conservation, and ecosystem-based adaptation (EbA). Therefore, within the framework of this program, initiatives in the field of beekeeping have been implemented, proving highly successful.

Bees play a vital role in pollination, food security, and ecosystem maintenance, while also providing a source of income for rural communities. Therefore, strengthening the capacities of local producers and entrepreneurs, with an emphasis on women and youth, to transform bee products into goods with greater commercial value is considered a priority.
